AI search visibility, measured properly.
When a buyer asks ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google a question in your category, are you in the answer? That is AI search visibility. Here is how to measure it today, what the tools can and cannot tell you, and the work that actually moves the number.
This guide, in 5 parts
Visibility moved inside the answer.
AI search visibility is how often the engines name, cite and recommend your company when buyers ask questions in your category. It is a different quantity from rankings, because the buyer often never reaches the list where rankings live. Pew found that when an AI summary sits on top of the results, clicks on those results drop from 15% of visits to 8%. Nearly half the clicks vanish.
And your analytics cannot see the difference. A buyer who reads your name inside a ChatGPT answer, decides you are worth a look, and arrives three days later by typing your name shows up as a direct visit, with the influence recorded nowhere. So the first honest step is measurement you run on purpose, because no dashboard you already own is watching this surface. We rank our own site and measure it, and this guide is the measuring half of that work.

How to measure it, starting this week.
Five steps. The first three cost nothing but time.
Build the question set
List 20 to 50 questions your buyers actually ask, taken from sales calls, support tickets and the questions Google shows under your keywords. Resist copying your keyword list verbatim, because buyers ask assistants in full sentences with context attached. This set is the yardstick for everything that follows, so keep it stable.
Run the panel across engines, the same way each time
Ask every question in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google (for AI Overviews), in fresh sessions, and save each answer with the date. Consistency matters more than scale: the same questions, the same way, monthly. A panel run differently each time measures your process, not your visibility.
Score share of answer
For each answer, record three things: were you named, were you cited as a source, were you recommended. Share of answer is the percentage of your question set where you appear, per engine. Track it beside the same score for your two or three closest competitors, because absolute numbers mean little without them.
Add tool coverage where the panel runs out
A manual panel covers dozens of questions. When you need hundreds, or daily sampling, or several markets, add tooling: your SEO suite's AI Overview reports for the Google side, a share of answer platform for the assistant side. The tools scale the loop you built by hand. They do not replace building it.
Watch the indirect signals
Referrals from chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai in analytics. Branded search volume rising while generic clicks fall. A plain 'how did you hear about us' field on your forms. Each signal is noisy alone, and together they tell you whether presence in answers is turning into pipeline.
What the tools tell you, and what they cannot.
Three categories exist in 2026. Classic SEO suites, Semrush and Ahrefs among them, now report whether AI Overviews appear on your keywords and whether you are cited inside them. Dedicated share of answer platforms, Profound and its peers, query the assistants at scale and report who gets named across prompt sets. And the manual panel from section two remains the free floor of the whole category.
Used well, they answer real questions: which of your money keywords now carry an AI Overview, whether you or a competitor is cited there, and how your share of answer trends per engine. That is worth having. Three limits, though, do not go away at any price.
They sample, buyers improvise
Every tool queries a fixed set of prompts. Real buyers phrase things their own way, ask follow-ups, and get answers shaped by their history and location. Treat any tracked score as a trend line, useful for direction, and never as a census of what buyers actually saw.
They report the score, not the cause
A dashboard can tell you that Perplexity skips you on eight questions out of ten. It cannot tell you whether the cause is entity confusion, pages the model cannot quote, or a web that does not corroborate your claims. Diagnosis is still reading the answers one by one and asking why each named source won.
They cannot see inside private chats
Conversations inside ChatGPT are not public data, so every tool infers from its own sampling. No vendor can audit what your buyers were actually told. This is a real limit of the whole category, and any tool that claims otherwise is overselling.
The work that moves the number.
Measurement without the follow-through is a scoreboard for a game you are not playing. Once the panel shows where you are absent, six changes do most of the moving.
- One canonical company name everywhere, with Organization and sameAs structured data, so engines resolve you to a single entity.
- Headings written as buyer questions, with the answer in the first two sentences below each.
- Self-contained paragraphs a model can lift without the rest of the page.
- One original number, quotation or named source per page. The GEO study measured up to 40% more visibility from exactly this.
- The same facts repeated off your site: directories, press, partner pages, review profiles.
- The panel rerun monthly, with the next month's work aimed at the gaps it shows.

Frequently asked.
How do I check if AI cites my brand?
Ask the engines yourself. Take the 20 most important questions a buyer in your category would ask, put each one to ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google, and record whether you are named, cited or recommended. Do it in fresh sessions and save the answers with dates. One afternoon gives you a baseline most of your competitors do not have.
Is there a free way to track AI search visibility?
Yes: a manual prompt panel in a spreadsheet, rerun monthly, costs nothing but an hour or two. Search Console will not help here, because it only sees Google's traditional surface. The paid tools earn their fee when you need daily sampling, hundreds of questions or several markets, and not before.
What is share of answer?
Share of answer is the percentage of a defined question set where an AI engine names, cites or recommends you, tracked per engine over time. It is the AI era's version of share of voice. It matters because buyers increasingly read the answer without clicking anything, so presence inside the answer is the visibility that counts.
Do AI Overviews reduce clicks?
Yes, measurably. Pew Research found that Google users click a result on about 8% of visits when an AI summary is present, against 15% when it is absent, and click a source cited inside the summary just 1% of the time. Nearly half the clicks disappear. That is why visibility now has to be measured inside the answer, and not only in the list below it.
You can run the first measurement yourself this week. The panel, the scoring and the free tier of all of it are above. Bring us in when the panel shows a competitor cited in your place, when the number will not move, or when you want the loop run, audited and reported for you. That work is Be the Answer.
